This time of year adults always seem to get antsy. Whether it is because our kids are at home and active, because there are so many more hours of sunlight, or just because summer still reminds of us of having fun, people tend to jump into remodeling projects around this time of year. The problem is when you get into something that you aren’t really prepared to do. If you are feeling the itch to do a few do it yourself projects, here are a few ideas that will make you feel you have accomplished something but won’t take up weeks to months to get them done.

Painting

Ah, the old reliable project, one that you can plan to complete in a few days and that will make everything look so much better. There are a few things you need to keep in mind through.

–          Make sure you have everything you need, including the right amount of paint to complete the job. This means taking measurements and knowing how many coats you want to put down.

–          You need to clean the walls before you get started. This includes filling in holes from picture nails. You want the walls to look good, so take the time to make sure they are even before you paint. You also need to get the dust off of the walls because dust could show if you don’t wipe the walls down first.

–          If you are doing the outside of the house, make sure you do the other maintenance first, such as pressure washing.

The Deck or Patio

With so many things to do this summer, you will probably be spending a lot of time on the deck or patio. Making sure to get them cleaned up, and in the case of wooden areas coated, you will have a great outdoor area that looks good and feels comfortable.

Updating Your Kitchen Cabinets

This does not mean taking them out and putting in new ones. It means taking out what is in them, cleaning them up, restraining the cabinets, and putting on new hardware. It will make your kitchen look brand new without the cost of new cabinets. It will also take far less time and energy to do.

Bathroom Makeover

This can be as simple as getting a new shower curtain and bathmats. If you want a really new look, you can get a new mirror and new accessories around the sink. It will make it feel like a cleaner bathroom without having to do a complete makeover.

There are also easy things like de-cluttering, garage sales, and selling old furniture and appliances you don’t really use. This cleans up the house and gives you more options for re-arranging furniture that you probably won’t be able to move otherwise. It can give you a great sense of accomplishment without all of the expense and time.
